New Electronic Multi-Mode RSC™ (Remote Steering Gear Changer) for Superyachts

Edson BlogFor the past five years, Edson Multi-Mode Geared Steerers have proven themselves in Superyacht circles as the ultimate steerer for feedback and control for yachts 100’ and up. Edson’s newest geared steerer, the Multi-Mode RSC™ (Remote Steering Changer) adds electronic control and the ability to mount in a remote location away from the wheels and pedestal.

At the heart of the system is Edson’s proven Multi-Mode™ two-speed steerer, which provides optimum helm control in varying circumstances such as heavy air vs. light air, passagemaking vs. docking or racing vs. cruising. The Edson Multi-Mode Steerer accomplishes this by giving the helmsman three steering modes to choose from: a lower gear ratio (higher power/slower speed) for increased steering control in heavy weather when steering loads are high, a higher gear ratio (faster steering response) for maneuvering at lower speeds such as docking, navigating a narrow channel while under power or sailing in lighter air, and a “Neutral” gear, where the steering wheels are disengaged from the steering mechanism when under autopilot.

Edson’s new version incorporates an electronic actuator that can be wired to a simple switch or push button at the yacht’s helm or helms, eliminating the need to hand-turn the gear mechanism. Because of this feature, the RSC unit no longer needs to be mounted in line with the wheel shaft and within reach of the helmsman, but can instead be mounted internally in the boat’s structure. This not only protects the unit from the harsh marine environment, but also gives the yacht designer and builder greater flexibility in helm station design, since there is no longer a need for a large console to house the steering unit. In addition, remote installation of the RSC greatly reduces both complexity and cost of the steering system since yachts with two wheels now only require a single steering gear changer. Weight is also reduced and its CG lowered because the single, RSC unit can be mounted lower in the boat’s structure.

Edson Superyacht Steering Systems have shown proven performance on many high-profile yachts such as Sojana, Pink Gin, Inmocean, Antonisa, Victoria of Strathern, Mystere, Visione, and Adele. The Multi-Mode RSC™ incorporates all of the features that have made previous versions successful including precision-ground gear teeth, eccentric bearing housings for future teeth mesh adjustment, multiple lubrication points for all internal needle bearings, and the ability to customize both gears and sprocket teeth sizes to meet the requirements of any yachts steering characteristics.
